Every person who doesn’t buy today isn’t a “no”. She may buy next month, after payday, or at Diwali.

But if you don’t even have her number or email, how will you remind her next month?

What is a lead?

Lead

A potential customer who has shown interest and given you a way to contact them: phone, WhatsApp, email or a form.

A follower isn’t a lead. You can’t message a follower whenever you want. With a lead you have a direct relationship, without the platform’s algorithm.

Lead magnet: give something, get contact details

People don’t give their number for free. Give something useful in return:

Guide / PDF

Useful information.

“Office wardrobe planner: 5 kurtis, 15 looks”

Early access

A chance to see things first.

“New collection 24 hours early”

Tool

Personal help.

“Confirm your size on WhatsApp”

First-order offer

A small deal.

Permission and privacy

  • Say it clearly: “You’ll get new arrivals and offers on WhatsApp. Reply STOP anytime.”
  • Collect only the information you need
  • Keep data safe; never sell it
  • India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 also emphasises consent and the proper use of data

Messaging without permission = spam. Spam gets your number blocked and reported, and your WhatsApp account can be restricted.

More leads or better leads?

A giveaway might get 2,000 leads, but half came only for the freebie.

  • Look at cost per lead, but lead → customer % matters more
  • 1–2 qualifying questions in the form (“What occasion are you shopping for?”) improve quality

StyleStreet’s real problem

Lots of viewers, nobody’s contact details

50,000 people watched StyleStreet’s Reels, but those who didn’t buy just left. Neha had:

  • Only old customers’ WhatsApp numbers (~250)
  • No email list
  • No lead magnet

Every month, thousands of “maybe later” people were lost forever.

Practical example: The “Office Wardrobe Planner” lead magnet

Carousel: “5 kurtis, 15 office looks”→“Comment PLANNER”→Auto DM: PDF on WhatsApp→Opt-in: weekly style tips

Your mission: Build a lead gen plan

For StyleStreet:

  1. Write 2 lead magnet ideas Priya would genuinely find useful
  2. Design a carousel + “comment keyword” flow
  3. Write the website pop-up copy (offer + permission line)
  4. Write an opt-in message that includes a STOP option
  5. Choose 3 lead sources and write the expected cost/effort of each
  6. Write 1–2 questions to check lead quality

Output for the client project

Your project file now has a Lead Generation Plan:

  • Lead magnet: Office Wardrobe Planner
  • Comment → DM → WhatsApp flow
  • Opt-in + privacy copy
  • Lead sources + quality questions
  • Result: 410 opt-ins, 29 orders (30 days)

In the next episode: In Chapter 30 we’ll learn which of these leads are hot, which are cold, and whom to follow up with when.
