Priya opens Instagram at 10 pm and scrolls through Reels. She gives each video 1–2 seconds.

If nothing interesting happens in the first 2 seconds, all your hard work disappears with the next swipe.

In this chapter we’ll learn to win those 2 seconds, and how to use the other formats properly.

4 formats, 4 different jobs

FormatBest jobMain metricStyleStreet use
ReelsReaching new peopleReach, watch time, sharesStyling, transitions, wash test
CarouselDetail, education, savesSaves, shares“5 kurti lengths and who they suit”
StoriesRelationship with existing followersReplies, poll votes, link tapsPolls, BTS, “today’s restock”
Single photoProduct showcaseProfile visits, DMsClean product + price

No single format does every job. A good mix is the real strategy.

Anatomy of a good Reel

0–2s: Hook→2–10s: Value / story→10–15s: Proof→Last 2s: CTA
  • Hook: visual + text both. “POV: 8:45 AM, nothing to wear to the office 😩”
  • Value: show the solution. 1 kurti, 3 dupattas, 3 looks.
  • Proof: a real customer clip, fabric close-up, wash test
  • CTA: “Save this for next Monday” or “Price in the comments”
Pro tipAlways add on-screen text. Many people watch without sound.

Professional video on a phone: 5 rules

  1. Light: natural light in front of a window. Not yellow night-time bulbs.
  2. Stable: a ₹300 tripod. Shaky video looks cheap.
  3. Vertical 9:16: fill the whole phone screen.
  4. Clean background: a plain wall, not a messy room.
  5. Short cuts: a new shot every 2–3 seconds. CapCut or the Instagram editor is enough for editing.

Neha has no designer (the Chapter 2 limitation). So simple and real is the strategy, not fancy production.

Carousels that get saved

A carousel is a mini magazine. People save it when they think “this will be useful later”.

Slide 1: Bold promise→Slides 2–6: One tip each→Slide 7: Summary→Slide 8: CTA

Example: “Kurti length by height” · a separate slide for 5', 5'3", 5'6" and 5'9", each with a photo of a StyleStreet kurti.

Stories: the relationship tool

Stories aren’t for reach; they’re for turning existing followers into customers.

  • Poll: “Next colour: mustard or teal?” People get involved by voting
  • Question box: “Ask anything about sizing”
  • Countdown: new collection launch
  • BTS: packing, printing, Neha’s morning
  • Link sticker: straight to the WhatsApp catalog
How many stories a day?

3–7 stories a day is a good range. With too many in a row, people drop off midway. Quality and interaction (polls, questions) matter more than the count.

StyleStreet’s real problem

StyleStreet’s Reels were “pretty”, but nobody watched

Neha’s Reels: a kurti spinning in slow motion, a song in the background, the logo at the end. Average reach just ~900.

  • No hook in the first 2 seconds
  • No text, no problem
  • 15 seconds of just fabric, no person or story
  • CTA missing

When the Reels were switched to the hook + value + CTA formula, average reach reached ~3,200.

Practical example: The full “wash test” Reel script

TimeVisualScreen text
0–2sNeha puts a kurti in the washing machine“Washed 10 times. Now watch 👀”
2–6sFast montage: wash, dry, iron (10x)“Wash 1… wash 5… wash 10”
6–11sOld vs new kurti side by side“Same colour. Same size.”
11–14sA model like Priya wearing it at the office“100% cotton · ₹899”
14–16sClose-up of the price tag“Size chart + order: link in bio”

This Reel also answers an objection (“cotton shrinks”, Chapter 3). The best content removes a fear.

Your mission: Build a one-week format mix

StyleStreet’s content plan for the next 7 days, by format:

  1. Write hooks for 3 Reels (the first 2 seconds of visual + text)
  2. Write a full Reel script in a table (time, visual, text)
  3. Outline a 7-slide carousel
  4. Plan 3–5 stories for each day (at least 2 polls/questions)
  5. Make a 5-point phone-shoot checklist
  6. Write the main metric next to each format

Output for the client project

Your project file now has a Format Playbook:

  • 4 formats, their job and metric
  • Reel script template (hook → value → proof → CTA)
  • 3 ready Reel scripts
  • Carousel template
  • Daily stories plan
  • Phone-shoot checklist

Golden rule: Choose the format built for the job. Reels get you discovered, carousels teach, stories build relationships.

In the next episode: In Chapter 12 we’ll learn how to turn people who comment and DM into customers and fans: engagement and community management.
