Priya sent a DM at 10 pm: “Is size M available? Is COD available?” The reply came at 2 pm the next day.

By then Priya had already ordered from another brand.

Social media is a shop whose door is open 24 hours. If nobody is at the counter, the customer leaves.

What is engagement and why does it matter?

Engagement

How much people interact with your content and brand: likes, comments, saves, shares, DMs, replies.

Engagement has two benefits:

  • Algorithm: posts where people stop and interact get shown to more people
  • Sales: every comment and DM is a possible customer

The most valuable signals: shares, saves and DMs. Likes are the weakest signal.

Reply speed: the cheapest growth hack

Remember the Chapter 5 KPI: bring reply time down from 4–24 hours to under 1 hour. How?

  • Quick replies: saved answers in Instagram/WhatsApp. Type “/size” and the whole size-chart message appears
  • FAQ highlights: price, size, COD, delivery all on the profile in advance
  • Fixed slots: 10 AM, 1 PM, 7 PM, 9:30 PM (the Chapter 10 routine)
  • Away message: “We reply 10 AM–10 PM. See the size chart here: link”
ResultWhen Neha’s reply time dropped below 1 hour, DM-to-order conversion went from ~31% to ~38%.

How to reply to comments

Comment typeWrong replyRight reply
“Price?”“DM”“It’s ₹899 😊 Sizes M–XXL available. Order link in bio!”
“So pretty 😍”Ignore“Thank you! What occasion would you wear it for?”
“It’s expensive”A defensive argument“We understand! It’s 100% cotton and stays the same after 10 washes, here’s the video”

A public reply isn’t just for that person; it’s for everyone reading.

Complaints and negative comments

Wrong size sent, late delivery, the colour looked different. Complaints will come. The real test is how you handle them.

1. Acknowledge fast→2. Apologise, no excuses→3. Move to DM→4. Solve it→5. Public update
  • Never delete (unless it’s abuse or spam). People notice.
  • A well-solved complaint often creates a loyal customer.

StyleStreet’s real problem

80 DMs, half answered late

Of StyleStreet’s 80 monthly DMs:

  • ~40 got a reply after 6+ hours
  • The most common questions (price, size, COD) were typed out every time
  • Neha deleted a negative comment (“wrong size arrived”), and the customer complained in her story

Engagement was coming in, but it wasn’t being handled.

Practical example: Reply kit: 5 saved replies

ShortcutMessage
/price“Hi! This kurti is ₹899, sizes S–XXL. Which size do you need? 😊”
/size“Here’s the size chart 👇 If it doesn’t fit, free exchange within 7 days.”
/cod“Yes, COD is available! Delivery in 4–6 days.”
/order“To order, please send your name, address, pin code and size.”
/sorry“So sorry about this 🙏 Let’s fix it now, please send your order number.”

Saved replies are a starting point. Add the customer’s name and a personal line to every reply; don’t sound like a robot.
