If you want to catch fish, you cast your net in a pond, not in the desert.

Choosing a channel means finding the pond where your fish (the customer) actually swims.

What is a marketing channel?

Marketing channel

The platform or medium through which a business reaches and talks to its customers.

Think of channels in 3 groups:

Owned

What you control.

Website, WhatsApp list, email list

Earned

What people give you for free.

Reviews, shares, word of mouth, press

Paid

What you pay for.

Meta ads, Google ads, influencer fees

Strengths and weaknesses of each channel

5 questions for choosing a channel

  1. Where is the audience? Priya scrolls Instagram at night and uses WhatsApp every day.
  2. What is the product like? Clothes are visual, so visual platforms.
  3. What is the goal? Sales, so channels where orders can happen.
  4. What’s the budget? With ₹15,000, not 6 channels; do 2–3 well.
  5. Team capacity? 2 people can’t handle 6 platforms.

Fewer channels, more depth

The most common beginner mistake: “We should be everywhere.” Result: half-done everywhere.

Rule of thumbOne main channel (discovery), one conversion channel (orders) and one support channel (paid boost). Master these first, then expand.

For StyleStreet:

Instagram (discover)→WhatsApp (order + repeat)+Meta Ads (boost)

Channels work like a team

Channels don’t work in isolation; they pass to each other, like in football.

  • Meta ad → shows an Instagram Reel
  • Reel → profile visit → bio link
  • Bio link → WhatsApp chat (price + size guide auto-reply)
  • Order → thank-you + review request on WhatsApp
  • 30 days later → new collection message (with permission)

This is called omnichannel thinking: wherever the customer comes from, the experience is smooth.

StyleStreet’s real problem

Neha was on 5 platforms and doing none of them well

Instagram, a Facebook page, Pinterest, YouTube and a Meesho store. 1–2 posts a week on each. The last Facebook post was 3 months old. Not a single order from Pinterest.

Decision: pause Pinterest and YouTube. All energy on Instagram + WhatsApp, and Facebook only for ads.

Practical example: StyleStreet channel plan (90 days)

WhatsApp BusinessOrders, support, repeatCatalog, quick replies, broadcast 2×/month₹0

Output for the client project

Your project file now has a Channel Plan:

  • Main: Instagram (discovery)
  • Conversion: WhatsApp Business
  • Boost: Meta Ads + micro influencers
  • Paused: Pinterest, YouTube
  • Phase 2: Website
  • Budget split of ₹15,000

Golden rule: You don’t need to be everywhere. Be where your customer is, and be so good there that she remembers you.
