Neha asks: “Is the algorithm suppressing my posts?”

The algorithm isn’t anyone’s enemy. It just watches whether people stop at your content or not.

In this chapter we’ll understand the algorithm and, most importantly, learn to read our own numbers.

How organic reach works

The platform first shows every post to a small group. If those people interact, it sends it to more people.

Post published→Small test group→Watch time, shares, saves?→Good → more reach
  • Reels: watch time and shares matter most
  • Feed/carousel: saves, comments, shares
  • Stories: replies and taps

Hashtags now play a small role. 3–5 relevant hashtags are enough; content quality is the real game.

Consistency and posting time

Posting every day isn’t necessary. The same rhythm every week is.

OptionReelsCarousel/photoStories
Minimum2/week1/week3+ daily
Ideal (StyleStreet)4/week2/week3–7 daily

The best time? Check “Most active times” in your own Insights. StyleStreet’s followers are most active 9–11 pm (Priya’s scrolling time, Chapter 3).

Profile: your online shop’s shutter

A viral Reel brings people to the profile. If the profile is confusing, it’s all wasted.

Watched a Reel→Profile visit→Bio + highlights→Link tap / DM→Order
  • Pinned posts (3): best-selling kurti, reviews, “how to order”
  • Grid: the first 9 posts should explain the brand
  • Bio CTA: “👇 Order on WhatsApp”

Instagram Insights: which numbers to watch

MetricMeaningWhat it tells you
ReachHow many unique accounts saw itHow far the content spread
Non-follower reach %How much reached new peopleIs discovery happening?
Profile visitsHow many came to the profileDid it spark curiosity?
Link taps / DMsHow many took actionInterest → lead
Saves / sharesHow many found it usefulContent quality
Follows from postHow many followed from the postDid they like the brand?

Monthly review: 3 questions

  1. Which are the top 3 posts? What do they share: format, topic, hook?
  2. Which are the bottom 3? What went wrong?
  3. Where did the funnel get stuck? Reach to profile visit, or profile to DM?

Then next month: more of the top, less or changed for the bottom. That’s growth from data.

StyleStreet’s real problem

“Followers grew, but I don’t know why”

Neha thought every post was equal. She had never opened Insights. When she first looked at 30 days of data:

  • Wash-test and styling Reels reached 4 times more people than other posts
  • Plain product photos had the lowest reach
  • Many profile visits but few link taps: the bio and highlights were weak

The data showed what to do more of, and where the leak was.

Practical example: StyleStreet: 30-day Insights report

MetricLast 30 daysNote
Accounts reached52,00060% non-followers (thanks to Reels)
Profile visits3,100~6% of reach
WhatsApp/link taps410Doubled after the bio fix
DMs + chats90Up from 80
Orders34Up from 25
New followers640

Insight: 25 → 34 orders from organic alone. In Stage 4 we’ll give this machine a home of its own (a website), and in Stage 5 speed it up with ads.

Your mission: Profile audit + monthly report

For your own or any brand’s Instagram:

  1. Look at the first 9 grid posts: is the brand clear within 5 seconds?
  2. Decide 3 pinned posts
  3. Note 30 days of reach, profile visits, link taps and followers from Insights
  4. Pick the top 3 and bottom 3 posts and write the reasons
  5. Write where the biggest leak in the funnel is
  6. Decide 3 changes for next month

Quiz

  1. The most important signal for Reels reach?

    • A. Number of hashtags
    • B. Watch time and shares
    • C. Posting time
    • D. Caption length
    Show answer

Correct answer: B. Watch time and shares

When people keep watching and share, the platform pushes the video further.

  2. Many profile visits, few link taps. Where is the problem?

    • A. Content
    • B. Bio, highlights and CTA
    • C. Hashtags
    • D. Posting time
    Show answer

Correct answer: B. Bio, highlights and CTA

People are arriving but not acting, so the profile isn’t converting.

  3. What does high “non-follower reach” tell you?

    • A. Followers are dropping
    • B. Content is reaching new people
    • C. Ads are running
    • D. Nothing
    Show answer

Correct answer: B. Content is reaching new people

Discovery is happening; that’s a good sign for growth.

  4. What should you do after the monthly review?

    • A. Nothing
    • B. Do more of what worked, change what didn’t
    • C. Delete all posts
    • D. Change only the hashtags
    Show answer

Correct answer: B. Do more of what worked, change what didn’t

Reading data means taking the next action from it.

Output for the client project

Your project file now has an Organic Growth Report:

  • Profile funnel audit
  • Posting rhythm (4 Reels + 2 carousels/photos a week)
  • 30-day Insights report: 52k reach → 34 orders
  • Top/bottom post analysis
  • 3 changes for next month

Stage 3 complete! The organic machine is running. Now it’s time to build your own website (your own shop), then ads.

Golden rule: Don’t fight the algorithm, understand it. Content people stop for moves forward. And growth without reading the numbers is just luck.

In the next episode: Stage 4 begins! In Chapter 15 StyleStreet gets its own website: the role of websites and landing pages.
