Priya saw StyleStreet’s Reel, checked the profile and asked about size on WhatsApp. Then an office call came and she forgot.

She wasn’t a “no”. She was a “not now”. Retargeting is the job of turning “not now” into “yes”.

What is retargeting?

Retargeting / Remarketing

Showing ads again to people who have already interacted with your brand but haven’t yet taken the desired action.

These people are warm: they know the brand and have shown interest. So showing them ads is cheaper and more effective.

How retargeting audiences are built

SourceAudienceWarmth
VideoWatched 50%+ of a Reel (30 days)🌡️ Warm
InstagramProfile visit / post save / DM (30 days)🌡️🌡️ Warmer
WhatsAppStarted a chat, didn’t order🔥 Hot
WebsiteViewed a product / added to cart (14 days)🔥🔥 Hottest
Customer listPast buyers (for repeat)💛 Loyal

Website audiences need the Pixel (Chapter 37).

A different message for each level of warmth

  • Video viewers: “Here’s the rest of the story” · reviews, wash test
  • Profile visitors: bestsellers carousel + price
  • WhatsApp chat, no order: “Your size is in stock now · COD + free exchange”
  • Cart abandoners: “Your kurti is waiting in your cart”
  • Customers: new collection, “early access for you”

Frequency, and avoiding being creepy

Retargeting audiences are small, so one person can see the ad many times.

  • If weekly frequency goes above 3–5, change the creative
  • Limit the window: 7–30 days, not a whole year
  • Exclude buyers immediately
  • Keep the tone friendly: “Forgot something?” is fine; “We’re watching you 👀” is not

Sequence: ads like a story

Days 1–3: Proof (reviews)→Days 4–7: Objection (size, wash)→Days 8–14: Offer (COD, gift)

Each step removes a different fear. Just like a salesperson in a shop first shows you, then answers your questions, then makes the deal.

StyleStreet’s real problem

Ignoring warm leads

StyleStreet’s TOFU ads led ~120 people a month to start a WhatsApp chat. Only ~25% of them ordered. The other ~90 people? Forgotten.

Neha was spending the whole budget on new people (TOFU), which is the most expensive. Warm people were slipping away for free.

Practical example: Cold vs retargeting: cost per order

CampaignAudienceSpendOrdersCost/order
TOFU (cold)New people, Jaipur 24–38₹4,56012₹380
BOFU (retargeting)WA chat, no order (14 days)₹2,70018₹150

Retargeting’s cost/order is ~60% lower than cold. But note: retargeting only works while TOFU keeps bringing new people. Both are necessary.

Your mission: Build a retargeting plan

For StyleStreet:

  1. List 5 retargeting audiences (source + time window)
  2. Write a message/creative idea for each audience
  3. Build a 14-day retargeting sequence
  4. List the exclusions (who won’t see it)
  5. Write a frequency limit and creative refresh rule
  6. Make a sheet comparing cold vs retargeting cost/order

Quiz

  1. Why is retargeting’s cost/order usually lower?

    • A. The ads are shorter
    • B. People already know the brand and have shown interest
    • C. Meta gives a discount
    • D. No reason
    Show answer

Correct answer: B. People already know the brand and have shown interest

    A warm audience converts faster.

  2. The “warmest” audience?

    • A. All women in Jaipur
    • B. People who watched a Reel for 3 seconds
    • C. People who added a product to the cart and left
    • D. A competitor’s followers
    Show answer

Correct answer: C. People who added a product to the cart and left

Reaching the cart is closest to buying.

  3. Show a BOFU “buy now” ad to customers who already bought?

    • A. Yes, repeatedly
    • B. No, exclude them; give them a separate repeat/new-collection message
    • C. Only on weekends
    • D. Block them
    Show answer

Correct answer: B. No, exclude them; give them a separate repeat/new-collection message

Showing the same offer is irritating and wastes money.

  4. Run only retargeting and stop TOFU. What happens?

    • A. All good
    • B. After a while the retargeting audience shrinks or runs out
    • C. Sales double
    • D. Ads get cheaper
    Show answer

Correct answer: B. After a while the retargeting audience shrinks or runs out

TOFU is what feeds new people into retargeting. You need both.

Output for the client project

Your project file now has a Retargeting Playbook:

  • 5 warm audiences + windows
  • A message per audience
  • 14-day sequence
  • Exclusions + frequency rules
  • Result: retargeting ₹150/order vs cold ₹380

Golden rule: “Not now” doesn’t mean “never”. Remind warm people, remove their fears, but don’t be creepy.

In the next episode: In Chapter 27 we’ll step outside Meta: Google Ads, where people are already searching. Search, Display and YouTube.
